Tommie freshman goalie Saskia Maurer has been named WCHA Conference Rookie of the Week, her second such honor this season.
The Rothenbach, Switzerland native faced 65 shots for St. Thomas and recorded a career-high of 60 saves in Sunday's 5-1 loss to unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Wisconsin, marking the second-most saves in a single game in all of Division I play this season. Her 60 saves are the sixth-most in WCHA history, while helping her to a season save percentage of .918 in seven games while facing an average of 40 shots a game.
St. Thomas is 4-9-1 as it nears the halfway point of its season, with eight losses to top-eight ranked teams.
Assistant coach Bethany Brausen said the consistent goalie play of Maurer and teammate Alexa Dobchuk has been critical to their success through 14 contests. The Toms are averaging 42 saves a game; have a .930 save percentage; and have killed off 38 of 42 power plays.
"Saskia and Dobber both show up and compete like crazy -- we could not be happier with our goaltending," she said. "That's a huge part of all our success throughout the year, whether it be a win or those small successes.
"You saw with Saskia (Sunday) she is a competitor. She talked to us in between periods, and she felt like she let in a goal or two that were soft. I wouldn't call them soft as a coach, but she felt that way and she turned it up a whole other gear to really try to prove herself and made some big saves. She's a fun player to coach, and I think she's only going to get better."
