Gritty Women's Hockey no pushover in 5-1 loss to No. 1 team

11/21/2021 6:53:00 PM | Women's Hockey

No. 1-ranked Wisconsin Women's Hockey used goals from five different players to take a 5-1 road win over St. Thomas Sunday and sweep their WCHA weekend series in Mendota Heights.

The Badgers (15-0-1), who won 7-1 on Saturday, hit their season average of five goals a game, but the host team saw a lot of positives in each game.
On Sunday, freshman Saskia Maurer stopped 60 of 65 shots for the Tommies (4-9-1). Her 60 saves were the sixth most by a WCHA goalie, and second most this season in Division I.

Freshman Abby Promersberger scored her team-high fourth goal of the season for the Purple, who have played eight of their first 12 games in D-I against top-eight ranked teams.

Acting head coach Bethany Brauser said she was proud of the way her players continue to battle despite facing such experienced and potent teams like No. 2-ranked Ohio State and No. 1 Wisconsin.

"For our group we keep talking about making incremental gains, getting one percent better every day," Brausen said.
"(After Saturday) we did some video review and we talked a lot about taking away the middle of the ice. We did a pretty good job of that yesterday, and did an even better job of that today, especially through the neutral zone. So that was a clean-up area for us. Even just generating more chances, shots on net, what we were able to generate that way, overall we're really happy with the performance."
The coach said the consistent goalie play of Maurer and teammate Alexa Dobchuk has been critical to their success through 14 contests. The Toms are averaging 42 saves a game; have a .930 save percentage; and have killed off 38 of 42 power plays.
"Saskia and Dobber both show up and compete like crazy -- we could not be happier with our goaltending," she said. "That's a huge part of all our success throughout the year, whether it be a win or those small successes.

"You saw with Saskia today she is a competitor. She talked to us in between periods, and she felt like she let in a goal or two that were soft. I wouldn't call them soft as a coach, but she felt that way and she turned it up a whole other gear to really try to prove herself and made some big saves. She's a fun player to coach, and I think she's only going to get better."

St. Thomas gets a holiday break and plays again Dec. 3 at Minnesota State.
