St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas volleyball team held tough in each of their three sets against Denver, but ultimately fell in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-13.
With the loss the Tommies fall to 2-18 on the season and 1-9 in conference action, while the Pioneers improve to 17-2 overall and 8-1 in the Summit League.
"I thought we came out with a lot of energy," said Head Coach Thanh Pham. "Denver is obviously at the top of the league for a reason. They run a lot of really fast offense and they can dig really well. I thought we hung in there for points, but overall, the better team did win tonight."
The Pioneers won the first set by a score of 25-18 and hit .324 in the set. For the Tommies in the first set, freshman hitter Lauren Galvin led the team with four kills and also posted four digs in the set.
The Tommies dropped the second set by a score of 25-14 and the third set 25-13.
As a team, St. Thomas hit .022 on the night and posted eight blocks. Galvin led the offensive efforts in the match for the Tommies posting a team-best 10 kills, which also tied for a match best. Senior setter Grace Anetipa posted 15 assists in the match.
"Obviously it doesn't get any easier," said Pham when asked about the upcoming match against Omaha. "It does help prepare us for another tough opponent. The Summit League is extremely balanced with a lot of great teams. We welcome the challenge."
