Tie and shootout loss puts Mens Soccer on bubble

Augsburg junior keeper Garrett Kaeilin deflected the last three shootout attempts to let his fifth-seed Auggies advance over fourth-seed St. Thomas to the semifinal round of the MIAC Men's Soccer playoffs.

Tuesday's game at UST's South Field finished 0-0 in two overtimes after 110 minutes of play but Augsburg used a 3-2 edge over five rounds of the tie-breaker.

St. Thomas (14-3-2) took a red card in the 24th minute after a hard challenge and played one man down over nearly 87 minutes. UST held a slight edge in corner kicks and shots but was unable to dent an Auggie defense that has allowed only 11 goals in 17 games. Walter Alvarado had one of UST's best scoring chances but his blast from the tp of the box hit the crossbar with just under 5:00 to play in regulation.

Despite being bumped from the playoffs after winning the 2016 and 2017 postseason titles, the Tommies extended their unbeaten streak to seven (7-0-1). They still are under consideration for an at-large berth when the national committee sets its field late Sunday night.

The Auggies converted the first, second and fourth shots in the shootout session while UST made its first and second shots.

Tommie senior keeper Aidan Hogan recorded his 30th career shutout and moved his record to 49-8-3 in 62 games over his four-year career.
