Tommies allow early penalty-kick goal in 1-0 defeat
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of St. Thomas (4-5-2, 0-1-0) fell to nationally ranked Kansas City (7-1-2, 2-0-0) 1-0 on Saturday.
The Tommies generated seven shots and six corner kicks but managed just one shot on goal while hanging with one of the best teams in the country.
St. Thomas fell behind in the first half when Kansas City converted a penalty kick at the 15:27 mark, following a non-foul call overturned on a second look via VAR. The Tommies responded with two corner kicks and two Ednilson Voiles shots in a five-minute stretch but could not find an equalizer. Moritz Krenc added a save in the 33rd minute, and St. Thomas went into halftime trailing 1-0.
St. Thomas pushed for the equalizer early in the second half, generating shots from Jacob Nokken and Quentin Hauswald and earning three corner kicks between the 51:35 and 58:38 marks, but could not find the net. Krenc kept Kansas City off the board with a save on Raphael Kistmann, and Voiles put a late shot on goal that was turned away by Brandon Kincaid. Neither team scored in the second half, leaving the Tommies with a 1-0 loss.
Voiles led St. Thomas with three shots, putting one on goal. Hauswald added two shots. Krenc played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded two saves, one in each half.
