Softball season ends with 2-0 loss to Fisher

Sophomore Lindsey Thayer spun a two-hit shutout and struck out seven and St. John Fisher pushed across single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for a 2-0 win over St. Thomas in an elimination game Friday at the NCAA Division III softball tournament in Salem, Va.
St. Thomas, which ended its season at 43-8, played Friday without dual-threat Kierstin Anderson-Glass, a .374 hitter who built a 30-5 record on the mound. Anderson-Glass was held out with an injury suffered late in Thursday's 3-2 loss to Emory.
Thayer retired the last 13 Tommies after issuing a two-out walk to Megan DuPuis in the third inning. It was the 17th shutout this season for Fisher (39-12).
"We didn't have (Kierstin), but our No. 2 and No. 3 pitchers did a very good job, " said "UST coach John Tschida. "They only had one walk between them, they held them down. "It was a well-played game, but somebody had to lose, and their pitcher had the better pitcher today."
UST senior Katie Jo Delisle tossed three shutout innings and stranded six SJF runners. Junior Jessica Eppenberger pitched the final four frames in her longest career outing.
Eppenberger had pitched just 21 varsity innings before Friday. She retired seven of the first eight batters she faced, but allowed a solo home run in the sixth inning. Fisher added another run via three singles in the seventh.
The Tommies' best scoring chance came in the second inning after a leadoff double by Dana Connelly and a bunt single by Micaela Trainor put runners at the corners. But Fisher threw out Connelly at home on double-steal attempt, leaving a runner at third with one out. Thayer, who led the nation in strikeouts, dashed the theat with two strikeouts to end the inning.
UST's defense helped keep it close. Megan DuPuis made several sharp putouts and assists at second base, and Dani Wigen had a diving catch in center field to end the SJF fifth inning.
Nine Tommie seniors closed out their careers: DuPuis, Delisle, Trainor, Wigen, Morgan Murphy, Danielle Tschann, Rebecca Bates, Allison Rice and Heather Kascht.
