Cook throws complete game; Carby, Lienhard homer in 7-5 win
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas softball (25-12, 6-3 Summit League) handed first-place Omaha (26-8, 8-1) its first conference loss of the season with a 7-5 victory Sunday afternoon at South Field. The Tommies struck early and held off a mid-game surge from the Mavericks behind a complete-game effort from Ella Cook.
St. Thomas plated three runs in each of the first two innings, building a cushion that proved crucial after Omaha responded with five runs in the third.
Cook battled throughout, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning before settling in to retire 12 consecutive batters following the third. She finished the game allowing five runs on six hit, with three walks and seven strikeouts across 7.0 innings.
After being limited to just two hits against Omaha ace Maddia Groff in Friday's matchup, the Tommies came out aggressive at the plate. Laken Lienhard led off the first with a single, and after a walk to Abbi Stierlen, Cassidy Carby launched a three-run home run (10th of the season) to give the Purple an early lead.
The Tommies added three more in the second inning. Lienhard again sparked the rally with a single before scoring on a triple from Avery Wukawitz. Wukawitz later crossed the plate on a fielder's choice by Stierlen, who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Kameron Monson.
Omaha answered with five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-out, two-run triple, but Cook regained control and did not allow another hit for the remainder of the game.
Lienhard provided a key insurance run in the sixth, leading off the inning with a solo home run to extend the Tommies' lead to 7-5.
St. Thomas finished with seven runs against Groff, who had not allowed an earned run through her first 22 innings of Summit League play entering the game.
