Baseball splits 2 in Iowa, now 22-6

No. 10-ranked St. Thomas Baseball split a Monday non-conference doubleheader at Central (Iowa), winning game one, 8-5, but falling 4-3 in the nightcap.
Sophomore Jake Smith ran his hitting streak to 17 games with a 5-for-6 day with a walk at the plate. Smith has reached base in 25 consecutive contests.
Soph Zach Gottfredsen went 4-for-6 on the day with a walk. Dan Ziemann drove in three runs in the opener and Craig Quinland knocked in two with a double. Reliever Ian Schwickert got the win in game one with five strikeouts and two runs allowed over three innings.
UST stranded seven runners in game two, including the tying and go-ahead runs in the lst at-bat.
The Tommies (22-6) resume conference play Tuesday with a doubleheader in Collegeville against second-place St. John's.

Drew Molin on Monday was named MIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week. The sophomore from Cottage Grove, Minn., had his first collegiate shutout last Tuesday with a 2-0 win at UW-Stout. Molin fanned eight and allowed three singles and two walks, with no Stout runners advancing past second base.
