St. Thomas Baseball saw its MIAC lead shrink as second-place St. John's recorded a 4-1, 8-7 home sweep Tuesday in Collegeville. Game two went 10 innings.
St. Thomas (22-8 overall, 11-3 MIAC) has lost four of its last five games, including two one-run decisions. The Johnnies (24-9, 12-4) have won 10 of their last 11. Two SJU starters worked 14 1-3 innings and allowed eight runs, only two earned.
The Tommies rallied from a 6-0 deficit in game two and led 7-6 in the eighth inning. A pair of two-out hits in the eighth tied the game. SJU scored an unearned run for a walk-off run in the 10th inning. Senior Eric Veglahn (5-1) pitched the last 1 1-3 innings in relief and took his first season loss and second career loss.
Jake Smith had a 17-game hitting streak halted in game one but hit a grand slam in game two to spark the comeback. Brady Johnson's RBI single put UST ahead in the eighth inning.
The Tommies play two Saturday at St. Olaf, and two next week at third-place Hamline.
