Defense shines, Football cruises past Eagles

No. 12-ranked St. Thomas recorded nine sacks and limited UW-La Crosse to 116 yards of total offense as it cruised to a 51-7 non-conference home football win Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
Junior RB Jordan Roberts had TD runs of 12, 10 and three yards, and set up another third-quarter touchdown with a 47-yard reception on 4th-and-5 from midfield. Roberts rushed for 92 yards and had 60 reception yards on two catches.
St. Thomas' 654 yards of total offense included 483 passing yards with two quarterbacks. Starting QB John Gould had a 40-yard scoring pass to Ryan Bradley in the first quarter. Backup QB Alex Fenske threw a 78-yard TD to Wolfgang Dvorak in the fourth quarter.
Glenn Caruso won his 75th game in eight seasons at UST (75-13), including a 16-0 record in regular-season non-conference play.
Gould completed 18-of-31 passes with one interception for 277 yards one one TD. Fenske threw for 206 yards as he completed 10-of-12 with no INTs.
The Toms allowed just nine first downs and held the Eagles under 120 yards of net total offense after 71 yards of sacks losses were deducted. La Crosse converted just two-of-14 on third down, one via penalty.
Jesse Addo, Anthony King-Foreman and Steve Harrell each had two sacks for UST, which also had a recovered fumble and forced 11 punts.
La Crosse's lone score came in just two plays in the third quarter via Mike Sanducci's 54-yard kickoff return that had a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty tacked on, and Tyler Jenkins' 30-yard TD run.
UST has outscored its first two opponents 113-14, including a 61-0 margin in the first half.
St. Thomas has a bye week ahead and plays Sept. 26 at No. 8-ranked St. John's.
