ST. PETER, Minn. – Trailing 2-1 after two periods, the St. Thomas women's hockey team came back to score a pair of goals in the third to capture a 3-2 comeback win over fifth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
Courtney Umland sparked the comeback, giving a hand to all three St. Thomas goals. The junior scored the team's first two goals and assisted on what proved to be the game-winner, as the Tommies improve to 11-8-4 overall and 10-2-4 in the MIAC.
Saturday's matinee began much like last night's contest, as the Gusties came out to take an early 1-0 lead on the power play. Courtney Boucher put her team on top just 3:30 into the game, but the Tommies came right back to tie the game five minutes later. Umland scored her first of two goals on the afternoon with an assist from Heidi Winiecki.
Another five minutes passed before Boucher gave Gustavus a 2-1 lead headed to the first intermission. The Gusties scored again with the skater advantage, their fifth power play goal of the weekend.
After a scoreless second period, the Tommies approached the final frame still trailing 2-1. UST drew a penalty to open the third period, creating a power play chance. The purple took advantage of that chance, as Umland came up with her second goal of the contest to tie the game 2-2. Tara Baago and Karina Marette recorded assists on the goal.
With just 4:41 remaining, Baago and Umland again connected to complete the comeback and score the game-winning goal. This time, Baago was on the scoring end, with assists from Umland and Marette, to capture the 3-2 victory.
Gustavus held a 29-22 advantage in shots and was 2-for-3 on the power play, but the Tommies tallied a pair of power play goals of their own in a 2-for-4 conversion rate.
Tommie goaltender Taylor Neisen stopped 27 shots and improves to 5-5-2 in the win. Her counterpart, Amanda Koep, made 19 saves in the losing effort.
St. Thomas will be back on the ice next Friday when the Tommies travel to the Municipal Athletic Complex to take on Saint Benedict for a 7:30 p.m., start before returning home on Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m., puck drop at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
