Women's hockey falls to No. 8 UW-Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The St. Thomas women's hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of eighth-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Friday night at Ice Hawks Arena. The Tommies outshot the Pointers 38-32, but could not find a way to pull off the upset. With the loss, UST drops to 5-5-1, while UW-Stevens Point improves to 10-4-1.
The Pointers opened the game's scoring in the first period. Lexi Englund scored at 9:45 of the opening frame to give her team the early 1-0 lead. The goal came with an assist by Meredith Ingbretson, as the Pointers went to the first intermission with the advantage.
UWSP added to its lead late in the second period. At 16:08, Kat Nejedlo scored on the power play to extend the Pointers' lead to 2-0.
The Tommies came back to cut the lead to one just 40 seconds later. Freshman Heidi Winiecki scored her fifth goal of the year to narrow the gap to 2-1. Courtney Umland assisted on the goal, which came on the power play.
However, UW-Stevens Point scored once more in the final minute of the second period to add the insurance goal it needed. Lexi Englund scored her second goal of the game to bookend the scoring in the game, as neither team would score in the third period and the score was stamped final, 3-1.
St. Thomas held a 38-32 shot advantage for the game. After trailing 11-7 in the first period, the Tommies came back to outshoot the Pointers 31-21 over the final two periods. UST was also 1-for-3 on the power play compared to 1-for-6 for UWSP.
Taylor Neisen recorded 29 saves in the loss and falls to 0-2-0 on the year. Her counterpart, Janna Beilke-Skoug tallied 37 saves and was awarded the win.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in Stevens Point, Wis. That opening faceoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
