Women's hockey can't hold lead, loses 3-2 in OT

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The St. Thomas women's hockey team led 2-0 midway through the second period, but could not hold off eighth-ranked UW-Stevens Point in a 3-2 overtime loss on Saturday night at Ice Hawks Arena. With the loss, the Tommies drop to 5-6-1 overall.
UST opened the scoring when Tara Baago scored at the 16:24 mark of the first period. Courtney Umland assisted on the goal, which gave the Tommies a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Rachel Friberg added to the St. Thomas lead, scoring at 13:22 of the second period. Friberg's fourth goal of the year came unassisted and gave the Tommies the momentum with a 2-0 lead.
However, the Pointers came back to score three unanswered goals to capture the win. Emily Lester got the comeback started with a shorthanded goal at 18:35 of the second period. The goal cut the deficit to 2-1 heading to the second intermission.
In the third period, Megan Menotti took advantage of a power play opportunity to tie the game at two apiece. Ali Biagini assisted on the goal, which sent the two teams to overtime.
It took 3:22 for UWSP to find the game-winner, when Shauna Bollinger put one home to take the win.
For the second straight night, St. Thomas outshot the Pointers. This time it was a 38-23 advantage, but again, UW-Stevens Point got the best of the Tommies on the scoreboard with the 3-2 overtime win.
St. Thomas netminder Taylor Neisen recorded 20 saves in the losing effort, while her counterpart, Janna Beilke-Skoug made 36 saves and was awarded the win.
St. Thomas will head back into conference play to try and snap a four-game losing streak. The Tommies will take on St. Catherine for a weekend series next weekend. The two teams will play on Friday night at St. Thomas Ice Arena before moving to Drake Arena on Saturday afternoon. Friday night's game is set for a 7:30 p.m., opening faceoff.
