The St. Thomas men's soccer team defeated Saint Mary's by the score of 4-0 on Saturday evening in Winona, Minn.  The Tommies scored two goals in each half on their way to improving to 6-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the MIAC.  Saint Mary's falls to 3-4-1 overall and 0-3-0 in league play.

UST broke a scoreless tie in the 27th minute when freshman Pierce Erickson scored his fifth goal of the season thanks to an assist from junior Mark Heydt.

Fellow freshman Christian Ellihausen got into the scoring act just before halftime when he scored his second goal of the year.  Another freshman, Shae Bottum recorded the assist on the goal, which gave the Tommies a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Bottum flipped roles from passer to scorer in the second half.  The freshman scored his first collegiate goal unassisted in the 49th minute to give UST a 3-0 lead.

Junior Miles Stockman-Willis capped the evening's scoring when he put one home in the 53rd minute.  Stockman-Willis's second goal of the year came unassisted to solidify the 4-0 shutout.

For the game, the Tommies outshot the Cardinals 13-9 thanks in large part to an 8-1 advantage in the final 45 minutes.  UST also registered five corner kicks compared to just two for SMU.

Mitchell Wolff was awarded the win after making just two saves and improves to 6-2-0 on the year.  Zach Satton suffered the loss for Saint Mary's after allowing four goals and making just one save.

"The first half hour of the game was back and forth," analyzed Head Coach Jon Lowery.  "Then we were able to take advantage of a couple chances and the game went from there.  I was happy with how our guys stuck with it and got the shutout."

The Tommie men will be back on the turf on Tuesday, Sept. 30th when they host Bethel on South Field at 4:00 p.m.

"We went down to Saint Mary's to get a win," said Lowery.  "We did that and gained momentum heading into Bethel next week."
