Men's soccer shuts out Bethel 6-0

9/30/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

The St. Thomas men's soccer team defeated Bethel University by the final score of 6-0 on Tuesday afternoon at South Field.  Junior Miles Stockman-Willis (shown in action photo at right)led the way with a pair of goals, as the Tommies improve to 7-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MIAC.  The Royals drop to 4-7-0 overall and 0-4-0 in league play.

UST opened the game with a pair scoring chances, hitting a pair of posts in the first 13 minutes.  In the seventh minute, freshman Connor Young was all alone on the doorstep, but could not put it away, glancing the shot off the back post.

Fellow freshman Shae Bottum had a similar result six minutes later.  Bottum nailed a post on a drive that would have given his team a 1-0 lead.  Instead, the game remained a scoreless tie.

The Tommies finally broke the tie in the 38th minute.  Sophomore Zack Fennessy scored his first goal in a Tommie uniform on a drive that skipped across the turf and tucked into the bottom left corner of the goal.  After a corner kick rebounded out to the top of the box, Fennessy sent it right back in to give the Purple a 1-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, the Tommies extended their lead to 2-0 when Miles Stockman-Willis got behind the Royal defense.  Miles outran the Bethel back line, received a long lead pass from Fennessy and chipped it up over a diving Royal goalkeeper to score his third goal of the season.

Stockman-Willis wasted little time adding to the St. Thomas lead in the second half.  The junior found himself in heavy traffic in front of the net following a well-placed corner kick by Mark Heydt.  Miles put it away to give the Toms a 3-0 lead.

After being snubbed by a post in the first half, Shae Bottum got redemption in the 69th minute.  Bottum scored unassisted for his second goal of the year to put UST on top 4-0.

The Tommies capped the scoring with a pair of goals within two minutes of one another late in the gaem.  Matt Bouche scored on an assist from Ignacio Garcia in the 79th minute, and Eric Meyer found the back of the net thanks to a helper from Josh Boris in the 80th minute to bring the final score to 6-0.

For the game, St. Thomas held a shot advantage of 19-9 and also registered eight corner kicks, compared to just three for Bethel.

Senior Mitchell Wolff logged 82:43 in net and was granted the win after making three saves.  Wolff improves to 7-2-0 on the year.  Bethel keeper Aj Syler suffered the loss after allowing six goals and making three saves.

The Tommies will be back in action again on Saturday when they make the short trip down Snelling to Hamline University.  That game is set for a 1:00 p.m., start time.
