The St. Thomas men's soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to Whitworth University (Wash.) in Monday's non-conference match at UST's South Field. Two Pirate goals in the final 20 minutes proved to be the difference, as the Tommies fall to 1-1-0 on the year.
Whitworth, who now has an 11-game unbeaten streak dating back to last season, was coming off a 1-0 win over No. 15-ranked Wheaton (Ill.). Today's win improves the Pirates to 3-0-0 on the year.
Just over 10 minutes into the game, Ryan Mooney found the end of a beautifully placed corner kick from Miles Stockman-Willis and put away a header just inside the post to put UST ahead 1-0 in the early going.
Moments later, Whitworth tied the game on a goal from the left side by Samuel Jarrett. Mikey Ramos drew two Tommie defenders before dropping the ball off at the top of the box. Jarrett tucked it inside the right post to bring the score to 1-1 heading into halftime.
The visitors opened the second half scoring in the 52nd minute. Ramos finished from inside the box to give his team a 2-1 lead.
UST answered minutes later on a goal by Christian Elliehausen on a low header. Matt Bouche sent a left-footed cross all the way to the back post where a diving Elliehausen was on the doorstep and did not let an open net go to waste.
But Whitworth converted the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute when Karl Muelheims won a battle in the box after a pass from Rylan Berriman. Muelheims turned and fired through a crowd and past a diving Mitchell Wolff to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.
Ramos closed the scoring in the final 7:00 as he converted a penalty kick from just outside the box on an angling clip into the top left corner. Ramos' second goal of the game put the seal on the win for Whitworth, as St. Thomas would only get one more chance in the final six-plus minutes.
After holding a 9-7 advantage in shots in the first half, the Tommies were outshot 9-5 in the second to give the Pirates the upper hand for the game (16-14). Whitworth also held the advantage in shots on goal with a count of 9-5.
St. Thomas goalkeeper Mitchell Wolff made five saves and was tagged with the loss. His counterpart, Tony Waters, made three saves and was awarded the win for his efforts.
The Tommies are back on the field on Friday, Sept. 5th when they host Lake Forest College (Ill.) at South Field. Kick off for that match is set for 4:00 p.m.
