Junior Amos Nash converted a header off a free kick in the final minute of the first overime to lift St. Thomas (2-1-0) to a 2-1 victory over Lake Forest College (1-1-0) in Friday's non-conference game at UST's South Field.
Lake Forest got on the board first when Max Shaw scored in the 10th minute. Dylan Hartman was credited with the assist. The goal put the Foresters ahead 1-0 and gave the visitors the momentum in the early going.
It wasn't until the closing minutes of the first half that he Tommies tied the game. In the 44th minute, junior Miles Stockman-Willis connected on a laser from the center, just outside the box. It was the first goal of the season for last year's MIAC-leading goal scorer.
The two teams went to the intermission tied 1-1, which is where it would stay for the remainder of the second half. The Foresters had multiple chances late in the final 45 minutes, but Tommie goalkeeper Mitchell Wolff was up to the challenge each time, making a pair of key diving saves.
St. Thomas also threatened numerous times. It's best chance came in the final minute when Stockman-Willis nearly found Connor Young on the back post for a header opportunity. Young was on the door step, but the two were unable to connect and the tightly-contested battle went to extra time.
Scoring chances were hard to come by for both teams through most of the extra 10 minutes. Finally, the Tommies were able to draw a foul deep in Forester territory in the final minute of overtime.
Stockman-Willis sent the free kick angling high into the box where a leaping Amos Nash headed the ball over the LFC keeper for the game-winning goal. Nash's first goal of the year could not have come at a better time, lifting St. Thomas to the win in sudden-death fashion.
UST's Mitchell Wolff and LFC's Ian Taylor each had four saves on the game in 99:02 in the nets. Wolff improves to 2-1-0 on the year, while Taylor drops to 0-1-0.
The Tommies play ther first road game of the season on Sunday at No. 2-ranked Loras in Dubuque, Iowa. That game is set for a 1:00 p.m., start.
