Offense comes to life in M. Hockey victory

The first-place Tommies (10-7-2 overall, 7-2-1 MIAC) received goals from six different players in Saturday night's 7-2 victory over St. Mary's (7-9-2, 5-2-1) in MIAC men's hockey play in Mendota Heights.
After tying 0-0 in overtime on Friday night in Winona, UST scored twice in a 1:47 span of the first period and never trailed. The Toms got a back-breaker goal from Alex Niestrom with one second left in period two to extend the lead to 5-2.
The Tommies converted 3-of-4 on the power play. Tyler Gubb had two goals and one assist; Riley Horgan and Alex Altenbernd each had a goal and an assist. Connor McBride and Robbie Vannelli each had a goal.
St. Thomas' Drew Fielding stopped 13 of 15 shots in 53:09 in net for the victory.
The Tommies and St. Olaf play next weekend with first place at stake. UST (7-2-1) has 15 points with six conference games to go. The Oles (6-2) have 12 points with eight games remaining.
