Late major penalty leads to game-winning goal in third period
OXFORD, Ohio — St. Thomas men's hockey (1-4-0, 0-1-0 NCHC) fought tooth and nail against the Miami RedHawks (6-1-0, 1-0-0) for nearly 56 minutes but allowed a late goal during a major penalty. Will Ingemann made 32 saves on 34 shots, and Chase Cheslock scored the Tommies' lone goal Friday night at Goggin Ice Center.
Miami put St. Thomas behind 36 seconds into the first period when Timmy Runtso scored at even strength on assists from Kocha Delic and Matous Kucharcik. The Tommies generated multiple looks as the period moved toward the midpoint, while Ingemann kept Miami from adding on with several saves. After a pair of RedHawk penalties, Cheslock tied the game on the power play at 6:09 on assists from Jakub Altrichter and Lucas Van Vliet. Miami applied late pressure, including a Kucharcik shot off the pipe and an Ingemann save on David Helledy in the final seconds, but the period ended tied 1-1.
St. Thomas opened the second period on the power play, carried over from a Miami tripping penalty at 19:53 of the first, and got attempts from Andrew O'Neill, Van Vliet and Justin Kipkie before the advantage expired. After coincidental minors at 17:50, the RedHawks generated much of the middle-period pressure, but Ingemann made saves throughout the stretch. A Bauer Berry holding penalty put Miami on the power play at 5:37, and although the Tommies returned to even strength at 3:37, Ingemann turned away a late series of Miami shots as the period ended scoreless.
St. Thomas had the first power-play chance of the third period after a Miami tripping penalty just under two minutes into the frame, but Matteo Drobac saved attempts by Nathan Pilling and Nick Williams before the advantage expired. Miami earned its own power play moments later after a Van Vliet hooking penalty, then generated a string of chances during a five-minute major after a Pilling boarding penalty at 12:44. Grimes scored on that power play at 16:27 on assists from Kucharcik and Helledy. St. Thomas called a timeout at 18:19 and created late looks from Van Vliet, Altrichter and Cheslock in the final minute, but Drobac made the final two saves as Miami finished off the 2-1 win.
