Tommies take down RedHawks, 4-1
OXFORD, Ohio — The University of St. Thomas defeated Miami 4-1 on Saturday for its first NCHC win. The Tommies scored twice on three power-play chances and got 35 saves from Will Ingemann for his first win of the season. Rico Blasi earned his 469th career win ranking him 20th all-time and fourth among active head coaches.
Miami generated the first stretch of pressure after a Quinn Rudrud tripping penalty, but St. Thomas killed it off as Ingemann made multiple saves and Aiden Grossklaus blocked a shot. The teams traded chances through the middle of the first period, with St. Thomas getting looks from Grossklaus, Jakub Altrichter and Kaeden Hawkins while Ingemann continued to turn aside Miami attempts.
After Miami was called for too many players on the ice, Nathan Pilling scored on the power play with 1:32 to go on assists from Hawkins and Justin Kipkie to put the Tommies ahead 1-0. Pilling scored again at even strength with 58 to play, again on assists from Hawkins and Kipkie, and St. Thomas took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Early in the second period, Miami generated several attempts that Ingemann handled or the Tommies blocked. St. Thomas then went on the power play at 1:55, and Pilling completed his natural hat trick at 3:36 on assists from Kipkie and Nick Williams for a 3-0 lead. Miami had two second-period power plays, after penalties on Attila Lippai and Kade Stengrim, but St. Thomas killed both while Ingemann turned away chances from Timmy Runtso, Matteo Giampa and David Deputy. Lucas Van Vliet made it 4-0 with 6:53 left on a Chase Cheslock assist, and the Tommies continued to generate shots in the closing minutes before taking the four-goal lead into the second intermission.
The third period opened with Miami generating much of the pressure, but Ingemann made several saves while St. Thomas created chances of its own, including a Rudrud shot off the pipe. Miami broke through on a power play at 6:50, when Kocha Delic scored on assists from David Helledy and Giampa to make it 4-1. Miami pulled its goalie with 2:50 remaining and put two shots on Ingemann before a Vladislav Lukashevich interference penalty gave the Tommies a late power play. St. Thomas played through the final minutes without allowing another goal and closed out the 4-1 win.
