Tommies fall 2-0 on the road against Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. — St. Thomas men's hockey (1-3-0) got a standout performance in net from sophomore Will Ingemann in a 2-0 loss to Minnesota State (2-4-0) on Saturday night. Ingemann stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced, but the Tommies, who outshot the Mavericks 30-25, were shut out.

St. Thomas created early pressure in the first period and earned the game's first power play when Gus Thorp was called for cross-checking at 5:56. Minnesota State pushed back through the middle of the period, forcing Ingemann into several saves and drawing its own power play after a Kevin Anderson trip at 13:32, which the Tommies killed off. The Mavericks broke through at 16:53 when Sawyer Scholl scored at even strength on assists from Liam Hupka and Jakob Stender to make it 1-0. St. Thomas went back on the power play at 18:23 after Reid Morich was called for holding, but the period ended with Minnesota State ahead 1-0.

Ingemann handled the Mavericks' early looks in the second period, making multiple saves before St. Thomas pushed back with chances of its own. Justin Kipkie hit the pipe at 12:26 near the end of a St. Thomas power play, and the Tommies went on another power play after a Will Skahan cross-checking penalty at 9:56, forcing several saves from Lassi Lehti. St. Thomas then killed a Kipkie tripping penalty with 3:20 to go, and the second period ended scoreless.

The Tommies generated the first stretch of chances in the third period before penalties to Andrew O'Neill and Chase Cheslock gave Minnesota State a 5-on-3 power play. St. Thomas killed it without allowing a goal, with Ingemann making saves and several defenders blocking shots in front. After matching roughing penalties at 9:04, the Tommies generated a series of chances from Cheslock and Lucas Van Vliet, then pulled Ingemann for an extra attacker with 1:36 left. Minnesota State sealed the win when Alex Zetterberg scored an empty-net goal on a Liam Watkins assist with 1:10 remaining.
