Tough overtime loss for Men's Hockey, 1-0
1/11/2013 12:00:00 AM | Men's Hockey
Zach Johnson scored a power-play goal with 29 seconds left in sudden-death overtime to lift Hamline to its first victory of the season, a 1-0 win over visiting St. Thomas in MIAC men's hockey play Friday night in Vadnais Heights.
Hamline (1-13-2, 1-6), which avenged a 2-0 non-conference loss to St. Thomas incurred four weeks ago, went on a power play with 1:28 left in OT and scored the game winner 59 seconds into the penalty kill.
The Tommies (8-7-1 overall, 5-2 MIAC) outshot the Pipers 33-21 but were shutout for just the second time this season. It was UST's first shutout loss in conference play since January 2011.
St. Thomas remains in a tie atop the conference standings with Bethel, a 4-1 loser at St. Mary's. UST and Bethel are 5-2, St. Mary's is 4-1 and St. Olaf is 4-2.
The teams play again Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Mendota Heights.
