Freshman Geoff Sadjadi stopped 34 of 35 shots to lead the visiting Tommies (12-9-2 overall, 7-5-2) to a 2-1 victory over St. Olaf in Saturday night's MIAC men's hockey game in Northfield.
With a tie and win on the weekend, the Tommies moved closer to securing an MIAC playoff berth and in the process are assured of .500 of better finish for the 29th year in a row for Tommie hockey.
Robbie Vannelli and Rob Philipp scored early in the first and second periods for the Tommies. They led 2-0 until the final 90 seconds. St. Olaf scored with an extra attacker with 1:11 left in regulation but couldn't get the equalizer.
Andrew Kappers and Riley Horgan had assists after scoring goals in Friday's 2-2 tie.
Vannelli's goal -- just 3:14 into the game -- was his first collegiate goal in 41 games.
The Toms close the regular season next weekend with two games against Bethel. With three points, UST secures a top-four finish.
In a November game against St. Olaf, Sadjadi and his teammates allowed five goals in the game's first 44 minutes in a 5-1 loss. With back-to-back wins in goal over the last eight days, Sadjadi improved his save percentage to .900 and lowered his goals-against average to 2.82.
The Toms are 9-2-1 this season when they score first. In the last two seasons, 24 of the Toms' 51 games have been decided by one goal or ties.
