Coach Weisz' Game Report
The Tommies started their 2009 MIAC season off in style with a 3-0 win over the Wildcats of St. Kate's. The 2008 defending MIAC champs started off the game with a high-pressure approach, pinning the Wildcats in their own end for long stretches. In the 11th minute, the Tommies earned a corner kick which was cleared out wide to freshman Brittany Cochlin, who served a driven ball back into the box, where junior Regina Horak was on hand to head home at the far post, putting the Tommies up 1-0.
The Tommies defense continued to apply smothering pressure in the attacking half, and turned it into a 2-0 lead. Senior captain Erin Sprangers picked up a loose ball out wide and found freshman Katie Ryan going forward on the touchline. Ryan beat her defender to the endline, and drove a low, knuckling ball across the face of goal, which the St. Kate's goalkeeper turned into her own net, gifting the Tommies a second goal going into the half.
The second half had a familiar tone to it, as the Tommies came out searching for a third goal. They didn't have to wait long. Just three minutes after the break, junior Lexie Fisher found herself with just a defender to beat wide on the right, and promptly did so, delivering a delightful service that picked out senior captain Kirsten Moran, who timed her run into the box to perfection. Moran made no mistake about the finish, hammering a superb first time volley into the back of the net.
The Tommies took their foot off the gas at that point, and comfortably saw out the remaining 40 minutes, earning a well deserved three points on the day.
The Tommies host Augsburg this Saturday at 1 p.m.
