Gikling's late OT goal lifts Men's Soccer

Andy Gikling's 15-foot shot found the open net with the game-winning goal in the 109th minute as host St. Thomas scored a 3-2, two-overtime victory over Oberlin (Ohio) in non-conference men's soccer play Sunday at UST's South Field.
The Tommies (3-0) surrendured the tying goal in the 88th minute, but responded in overtime. Jon Stillwell's header just missed a score in the 105th minute, and moments later, 108:36 into the game, Gikling got loose in front of the net and pushed the ball into the top right corner for an unassisted, game-winning goal. Gikling had five goals in 2006 as a freshman but played in only six games in 2007 while slowed by injuries.
Freshman Mike Hutton continued his impressive play with a goal 67 seconds into the match, assisted by Derek Engler. Hutton also had an assist on Stillwell's goal in the 26th minute. Hutton now has four goals and two assists in three college games.
Oberlin (4-1), coming off a 3-0 win at Macalester two days earlier, scored in the 30th minute on Luke Hoffman's goal, and tied the game with Evan Atwell's goal at 87:59.
UST's Carlos Castelan and Oberlin's Zach Lipschultz each played all 108:36 in goal and had four saves apiece.
St. Thomas is home Wednesday to face St. John's in its conference opener (4 p.m.).
