W, 3-2
Loras (M), October 10, 2008

Three unanswered goals helped the host Tommies (10-3-1) post a 3-2 win over No. 12-ranked Loras (9-2-1) in non-conference men's soccer play Friday at UST's South Field.

The Duhawks, a Final Four team and 24-0-3 finisher in 2007, incurred their first defeat to a Division III opponent in the last two seasons. They also allowed more than two goals for the first time since October 2006.

St. Thomas climbed to 8-0 at home this season.

Loras outshot the Tommies 8-5 and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The Duhawks came in with a 14-1 season advantage in second-half goals but were outscored 2-1 in the final 45 minutes today.

Tyler Hoyt cleaned up a deflected free kick for a 1-0 Loras lead in the ninth minute. Santiago Mejia earned an assist.

The Tommies scored in the 20th minute on Derek Engler's shot from 30 yards. Freshman Mike Hutton made it 2-1 Tommies with a goal in the 51st minute -- his 10th of the season -- assisted by Jon Stillwell. Taylor Lynch made it 3-1 with a rebound goal off Loras keeper Nate Dubois in the 70th minute.

Just 10 seconds later, after a hand ball was called on UST in the box, Miguel Bonilla converted a penalty kick in the 70th minute to trim the lead to 3-2.

Each team received two yellow cards in an intense last 20 minutes, but the Tommies held on.

UST junior Carlos Castelan improved to 10-2-1 in goal this season and made seven saves. Dubois had two saves for Loras.

The Tommies play at home Tuesday against Macalester.
