Freshman Mike Hutton scored two goals, including the go-ahead tally in the 70th minute, to lead the host Tommie men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Macalester in MIAC play Tuesday at UST's South Field.
St. Thomas (11-3-1 overall, 5-1-1 MIAC), survived an early Macalester goal and improved to 9-0 at home this season. The Tommies are 4-0-1 against Macalester in their last five meetings after going 0-8-1 against the Scots from 1996-2003.
St. Thomas outshot the Scots 21-9, including a 12-2 margin in shots on goal. Matt Weyer had 10 saves for Mac in goal, while UST keeper Carlos Castelan had one save.
The Scots (8-6-1, 4-3-1) took a 1-0 lead just 34 seconds into the match on a goal by Jake Rocke (assisted by Eric Tettegah). But Hutton tied the score with a goal 72 seconds into the game (assisted by Andy Gikling).
The game went scoreless for the next 68 minutes until Hutton took a pass from Elliot Amundson and converted from 15 yards for a 2-1 lead. Hutton now has 12 goals -- third most nationally in Division III among freshmen.
The Tommies are off until an Oct. 22 home game against St. Olaf.
