The St. Thomas men's soccer team used goals from unlikely scorers in the 77th and 82nd minutes to claim a 2-0 win over visiting Hamline in MIAC play Wednesday at UST's South Field.
The Tommies (8-3-2 overall, 3-0-2 MIAC) remained unbeaten in the MIAC and moved into a second-place tie with Gustavus (4-1), one point behind Carleton (4-0-1). They avenged a pair of 1-0 losses to Hamline the last two seasons.
Dan Hutton was in goal all 90 minutes for the UST shutout. Hutton made a diving deflection at the top of the box in the first half to stop the best chance for eith team in the first half. He finished with six saves.
The Tommies controlled most of the second half. They had shots hit the cross bar in both the 58th and 64th minutes. Sophomore Derek Engler scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by Thomas Gjervold, to put the Toms ahead 1-0. He came inside and lofted a shot shot into the top corner. Five minutes later, sophomore Sean Kennedy scored his first college goal on a rebound of a Jon Stillwell shot that came off the Piper goalie.
UST had a slight 9-7 edge in corner kicks and a 12-9 advantage in shots.
St. Thomas plays Concordia-Moorhead Saturday at home (4 p.m.).
