Sophomore QB David Sauer threw four TD passes as the St. Thomas football team clinched a winning record and a first-division MIAC finish with Saturday's 35-7 win at Hamline.
Sauer finished 21-of-32 in the air for 256 yards with no interceptions for the Toms (6-3 overall, 5-2 MIAC), who broke to a 14-0 first-period lead. Sophomore RB Scott Brink scored two TDs, including a screen pass for a 50-yard touchdown, and also rushed for 91 yards.
Senior Justin Nwadiashi had a fumble recovery and his ninth career interception for the Tommie defense. UST had three sacks and held Hamline scoreless in four Piper trips inside the UST 20-yard-line. Senior Roger Casey also had a pickoff. UST had no turnovers and outgained the Pipers 393-295 yards.
After Hamline scored to make it 14-7 midway through the second period, the Toms scored on a TD pass from Sauer to Tony Margarit in the corner of the end zone just before halftime for a 21-7 cushion. Margarit caught a TD pass in the second half.
The Toms close their season next Saturday at home vs. St. Olaf. The winner will take third place in the conference, or tie for second place if Bethel loses at St. John's.
The Pipers (3-6, 1-6) scored on Ben Ganske's 30-yard run in the second period.
