Tommies sit five strokes back of first-place South Dakota

MESA, Ariz. – Senior Owen Rexing fired a three-under 68 in Sunday's opening round of the Summit League Championship at Longbow Golf Club, earning a share of the individual lead.

As a team, St. Thomas battled through a challenging middle stretch to post a five-over-par 289, tying for fifth place with South Dakota State and Omaha. The Tommies sit five strokes behind leader South Dakota, which posted an even-par round and holds a two-shot edge over North Dakota State

Rexing opened strong with three birdies in his first six holes before making the turn at one-under following back-to-back bogeys on holes 7 and 8. He responded with a birdie on 10, added his final bogey on 11, and played the final seven holes bogey-free, highlighted by birdies on 13 and 18. His six birdies tied for the most in the field, matching teammate Mason Roloff.

Zach Rouleau also cracked the top 20, carding a two-over 73 to tie for 20th. After a double bogey on hole 4 and a bogey on 5, the junior steadied his round with 12 pars, including a clean back nine.

Gavin Newkirk and Tyler McNeive each shot three-over 74 and are tied for 24th. Newkirk recorded three birdies, while McNeive added two.

Roloff finished at four-over 75, tying for 35th. Despite matching the tournament high six birdies, he was hampered by six bogeys and two double bogeys.

As a team, St. Thomas led the field with 18 total birdies in the opening round.
