Cook, Kleinfeldt toss complete games as Tommies outscore Jackrabbits 17-6
Game One
Laken Lienhard started the game off with a bang on a no-doubt leadoff home run on the ninth pitch of her at-bat. The Jackrabbits answered with one run in the bottom of the inning off Ava Kleinfeldt.
Kleinfeldt went the distance and stayed out of danger for most of the game. She allowed five earned runs on 11 hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Her offense provided her with more than enough support.
The Tommies belted four home runs in total. After Lienhard got them started, Cassidy Carby, Ella Cook, and Avery Wukawitz each tallied their 13th home run of the season, an all-time program record for the Tommies.
Carby's was a two-run shot in the third, Cook's was a two-run homer in the fifth, and Wukawitz supplied some insurance with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning.
The Purple also got runs on a two-run double by Ruby Moore in the fourth and an RBI fielder's choice by Kameron Monson in the sixth.
Game Two
As she has done so many times before, Ella Cook added more runs on offense than she allowed in a complete game in the circle. The senior provided herself with run support with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, her team-leading 14th of the season.
Cook then tossed seven innings of one-run (unearned) ball with seven hits allowed, three walks, and four strikeouts to lower Summit League leading ERA.
The Tommies added one run in the third after back-to-back singles from Lienhard and Wukawitz and a South Dakota State error. The Purple tallied two more in the fourth on a Morgan Klein RBI single to bring Abbi Stierlen home and Moore sacrifice fly to plate Zoe Trotter.
Carby added one more insurance run in the seventh to bring Wukawitz around after she led off the inning with a single and stolen base.
Cook danced out of danger after allowing a pair of one-out singles in the seventh to retire the side and secure the doubleheader sweep.
Up Next
The Tommies are scheduled to play the Jackrabbits at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 if the impending weather cooperates.
