Wukawitz Powers Offense but Tommies Fall Twice at Iowa State

St. Thomas scores 13 runs across doubleheader; Iowa State claims 6-5 and 11-8 decisions
AMES, Iowa. -- Multi-hit performances from Avery Wukawitz and Laken Lienhard, along with a combined nine RBI from Wukawitz, Ella Cook and Grace Nosan, highlighted a strong offensive day for St. Thomas softball, but Iowa State completed a doubleheader sweep Tuesday at the Cyclone SB Complex. The Cyclones (31-21) took game one, 6-5, before securing an 11-8 win in game two over the Tommies (32-17).
Game One — Iowa State 6, St. Thomas 5
St. Thomas opened the afternoon with a four-run first inning, stringing together four hits to take early control. Lienhard drew a leadoff walk and Wukawitz followed with a double before Cassidy Carby lifted a sacrifice fly to open the scoring. Abbi Stierlen added an RBI single, and Grace Nosan delivered a two-run single down the left field line to extend the lead to 4-0.
Iowa State responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and pulled even in the third behind an RBI double from Karlee Ford, tying the game at 4-4.
Cook worked through traffic across the middle innings, and the Tommie defense turned two double plays to keep the game level through five innings. The Cyclones broke through in the sixth, using a bases-loaded situation to score twice on a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly to take a 6-4 lead.
Wukawitz brought St. Thomas within one in the seventh with a solo home run to center field, but Iowa State held the tying run on second and go-ahead run on first with a strikeout to seal the victory.
Wukawitz finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Stierlen added two hits with an RBI. Nosan drove in two runs to pace the Tommie offense.
Game Two — Iowa State 11, St. Thomas 8
The Cyclones used a five-run first inning to take early control in game two, a three-run home run and a solo shot.
St. Thomas answered in the second inning, cutting into the deficit with three runs. Wukawitz doubled home a run before Cook followed with a two-run single to make it 5-3.
Iowa State added a run in the second, but the Tommies responded again in the fourth. Ruby Moore doubled to lead off the inning, and consecutive run-producing plays - an RBI double from Wukawitz, a sacrifice fly from Carby and another from Cook - tied the game at 6-6.
After Iowa State regained the lead in the fourth, St. Thomas evened the score once more in the fifth as Wukawitz drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home a run.
The Cyclones took control in the bottom half, capitalizing on an error to plate the go-ahead run before adding three more in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-7.
Zoe Trotter led off the seventh with a solo home run to center field, but Iowa State recorded the final outs to complete the sweep.
Wukawitz went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two doubles in game two, finishing the day with four hits and four RBI. Lienhard added three hits and two runs scored, while Cook drove in three runs. Trotter recorded two hits, including her home run, and scored twice.

St. Thomas prepares for its final regular season and Summit League series April 30 – May 2 as North Dakota enters South Field. The Tommies and Fighting Hawks will play at 3 p.m. on Thursday, 1 p.m. on Friday and 12 p.m. on Saturday.
