Nosan, Wukawitz homer in 10-2 victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas softball (33-16, 11-4 Summit League) matched its program record for wins with a 10-2, six-inning victory over North Dakota (27-23, 4-11) on Thursday afternoon at South Field.

The Fighting Hawks struck first, giving starting pitcher Tegan Livesay a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Livesay entered the game coming off her first career no-hitter and a 14-inning scoreless streak, but that momentum did not last long. After a lead-off walk to Laken Lienhard, Avery Wukawitz finessed an inside-the-park home run to out the Tommies in front.

St. Thomas added four more runs in the second inning after Ella Cook worked a scoreless top half. Kameron Monson drew a leadoff walk before Grace Nosan sent a towering home run over the left field fence, her third of the season. Later in the inning, Lienhard doubled to right field and Wukawitz walked, setting up Cassidy Carby, who drove both runners home with a double.

North Dakota plated its second run in the third inning on a passed ball, unearned on Cook's ledger. She limited the damage by stranding runners on second and third with an inning-ending strikeout. Cook continued to battle through traffic, leaving two runners on in the fourth and striking out three in the fifth to escape a bases-loaded jam. She also contributed at the plate with an RBI double later in the inning.

The Fighting Hawks threatened again in the sixth, putting runners on second and third, but Cook recorded her ninth and 10th strikeouts to end the frame. Her 10 punchouts marked a season high and were one shy of her career best.

Unity Nelson entered in relief for Livesay in the sixth, but the Tommie offense quickly secured the run-rule win. Wukawitz drew an RBI walk, and Carby delivered again with a two-run double to score lienhard and Gracie Konkol, ending the game.
Cook earned the win, pitching six innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts.
