Cook dominates as Tommies split at Wisconsin

MADISON, WIS. – The University of St. Thomas (30-14, 8-4 Summit League) softball team earned a B1G split Tuesday afternoon. The Tommies earned their first win over the Wisconsin Badgers since 2023, as a dominant performance in the circle from Ella Cook resulted in a 3-0 game one victory for St. Thomas. The Tommies then fell in game two 4-3 behind a seventh inning rally from the Badgers.

GAME 1: ST. THOMAS (3) vs. WISCONSIN (0)
Entering Tuesday's contest, the Tommies and Badgers were two evenly matched teams, with matching statistics in nearly every category. While Wisconsin held an advantage in batting average, St. Thomas entered the game with more home runs, RBIs and a better slugging percentage. That showed in game one, as the Tommies utilized a Grace Nosan double and Cassidy Carby home run to secure the 3-0 victory.

Nosan's double scored Ella Cook in the top of the second, giving St. Thomas an early 1-0 lead over the Badgers. The Tommies then extended their lead to 2-0 in the second when Abbi Stierlen took advantage of a Wisconsin error to score from third base. Carby then made it 3-0 in the seventh with her 11th home run of the season.

The 2-0 lead would have been enough for starting pitcher Cook, who mowed down the Badger line up. The senior secured her sixth shutout of the season in dominant fashion, limiting Wisconsin to just three hits in seven innings of work. In fact, only one Badger reached second base when Jackie Showalter led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. It was no harm, no foul for Cook, as she sent the final three Wisconsin batters down in order to secure the 3-0 win for St. Thomas.

GAME 2: ST. THOMAS (3) vs. WISCONSIN (4)
The Tommies offense picked up right where it left off in game one, threatening to score in both the first and second innings. St. Thomas finally struck in the top of the third, as Miley Wichman scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Tommies another early 1-0 lead.

Back-to-back home runs from Carby and Cook would boost the St. Thomas lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth, though the Badgers did answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Still, with a 3-1 lead, it looked like the Tommies and starter Ava Kleinfieldt would cruise to victory, earning the first Power 4 sweep of the DI era. That was not meant to be, as Wisconsin rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim game two by a final score of 4-3.
