Tommies face Gophers in Tuesday showdown

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas baseball team had a bit of a rough Tuesday, falling to the University of Minnesota in the third of a four-game series. Despite a strong start, the Tommies fell to the visiting Gophers by a final score of 24-2. With the loss, St. Thomas falls to 6-24 on the season and remains 2-8 in Summit League play.

The Tommies struck first in the top of the first, as Owen Bond scored from third on a wild pitch by Gopher starter Luke Ryerse. Minnesota answered by scoring two runs in the top of the second, taking a 2-1 lead the visitors. Though St. Thomas threatened in the bottom of the second and third, the Tommies never scored the game tying run. The Gophers, though, continued to add to their lead, scoring four in the fourth to make it 6-1.
St. Thomas cut the lead to 6-2 in the fourth, as Tanner Recchio's single scored Adam Puder from second. Minnesota responded by scoring nine in the fifth and eight in the sixth, extending its lead to 23-2 after six innings of play.
The Gophers scored their final run of the game in the top of the sixth, cementing the 24-2 victory.
UP NEXT
St. Thomas will resume baseball activities on Friday, April 17 when the Tommies host Northern Colorado in Summit League play. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is at 12:00 p.m. at Koch Diamond in St. Paul, Minnesota.
