#15 Men’s Hockey hits the road to RV Bowling Green

The Tommies defend first place in the CCHA for the fourth consecutive weekend
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The last time that #15 St. Thomas (17-8-3, 14-4-2) matched up with Bowling Green (14-6-6, 11-4-3), the Falcons were in first place, and the Tommies were yet to hit their stride in November. Since the Tommies took four of six points from the Falcons that weekend, they are 12-2-1 with 45 points atop the conference table. St. Thomas travels into hostile territory to Slater Ice Arena for a two-game series with the Falcons this weekend.
The Tommies' nation-leading 11-game win streak came to an end last Saturday in a 4-3 loss at home against #19 Michigan Tech. St. Thomas is four points clear of Augustana with one month still to play. The Purple cannot clinch a home playoff series this weekend. Alex Gaffney leads the Toms with 33 points after a three-goal weekend against the Huskies. Lucas Wahlin and Lucas Van Vliet each joined Gaffney in the 30-point club last weekend.
Bowling Green is fresh off a pair of ties with Notre Dame of the B1G conference. The Falcons currently sit in fifth place with 36 points, one point behind Minnesota State in fourth, with two games in hand on the rest of the conference. Quinn Emerson paces them in points with 29 and is one of four skaters leading the way with eight goals (Hotson, Morneau, Grant). All three rostered goaltenders have seen playing time this season and as a whole have combined for a 2.37 GAA and .903 SV%, Jacob Steinman leads with seven wins and a .916 SV% while Tyler Palmer's 2.16 GAA is best between the three.
THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES
-Friday night's game at Slater Family Ice Arena is scheduled for a 6:07 p.m. CST puck drop. The Toms have not been great on Fridays this season with a 6-4-2 record.
-Saturday's game has been bumped up an hour with a 5:07 p.m. CST start time. The Purple are 10-3-1 on Saturdays and 6-2-2 outside of Minnesota this season.

-St. Thomas has set a new program record in single season conference points (45) and conference wins (14) with six games still to go.
-They are two goals from tying the single season program record (111) set last season.
-They have already set a new program record in assists (185).
-The Tommies' 4-3 loss to #19 Michigan Tech last Saturday was their first Saturday loss since October 25th. They are 10-3-1 this season on Saturday.
-The loss was also their first of the season when tied after two periods. They are now 3-1-2. The Toms are 14-2-3 when tied or leading after 40 minutes.
-St. Thomas has not lost more than one game in a month since October (4-1-2 in Nov., 3-1-0 in Dec., 8-1-0 in Jan.).
-Six of the Toms' eight losses this season have come in white, they are 8-1-2 in purple and 4-1-0 in gray.
-Ryan O'Neill recorded his fourth straight 20-point season last weekend.

FORWARD AND ROOKIE OF THE MONTH
St. Thomas men's hockey won eight of nine games in January with outstanding individual performances up and down the lineup. Two of the Tommies' most productive players have been rewarded by the league with Player of the Month honors. Lucas Wahlin is the Forward of the Month and Lucas Van Vliet is Rookie of the month. This is the second time Wahlin has received the honor and the first time in program history a Tommie has received Rookie of the Month.
Lucas Wahlin led the Tommies with a +11 rating and three first goals. He added at least one point in all nine games this month and totaled six goals and seven assists for 13 points. He scored one shorthanded goal and one game winning goal. The third-year captain leads the CCHA with 18 goals this season and his .69 goals per game are tied for fifth in the nation. His 31 points are tied for third in the conference with his fellow honoree, Lucas Van Vliet. Wahlin also leads the entire CCHA with a +16 rating.
Van Vliet led the Tommies with 15 points with at least one in eight of nine games this month. He scored four goals and added 11 assists with two power play goals and one game-winner. Van Vliet became the first Tommie freshman to record a 30-point season and is near the top of the conference. He is fourth in points among the nation's freshmen this season behind Ethan Wyttenbach of Quinnipiac, Porter Martone of Michigan State, and Gavin McKenna of Penn State.
Wahlin's Forward of the Month is the second of his career (only Tommie with two), the second of the season (Alex Gaffney), and the fourth in program history. Van Vliet's Rookie of the Month is the first in program history. These are the fourth and fifth Player of the Months honors this season for the first place Tommies.
WAHLIN FOR HOBEY
Lucas Wahlin is one of the best players in the nation and has been for a couple of seasons now. The third-year captain is in his final year with the Tommies and is the sole nominee for the Hobey Baker Award from St. Thomas. Wahlin has been the foundation for the Tommies during their rise to becoming one of the best programs in the country with production on the ice and an unwavering ability to lead off the ice. The former NA3HL forward has improved relentlessly across his four seasons of college hockey. This season he became the first Tommie in DI program history to surpass 100 points (123 now) and 50 goals (53 now). He is the all-time leader in the "new" CCHA in goals and points. Nationally he ranks fifth with .69 goals per game and 18 total goals and 18th in points per game (1.19).
ELITE COMPANY

GRAY JERSEY SUCCESS
The Tommies debuted their alternate gray uniforms on October 12th in a 5-2 loss against then #10 North Dakota. They have not been defeated since with a 4-0-0 record. Stats in their four games since the debut: 5.5 goals per game, 2.5 goals allowed per game, 31 PP%, 81 PK%, +1 in first period, +6 in second, +5 in third. -Head coach, Rico Blasi, won his 450th game on Tuesday, November 11 against St. Cloud State. The now 25-year head coach currently sits 22nd all-time and fourth among active head coaches. His 463 career wins are tied with Murray Armstrong in 21st place all-time, five from Joe Marsh in 20th, and nine from Don Vaughan in 19th. Blasi is the fourth winningest among active head coaches.
100 FOR WAHLIN
-Lucas Wahlin became the first Tommie to score 100 career points after his three-point burst against the St. Cloud State Huskies on Tuesday, November 11. The Tommie captain did so in 109 games at a 0.92 points per game pace.
-25 different players either assisted on a Wahlin goal or scored a goal off a Wahlin assist over the course of the last four seasons.
-Liam Malmquist led each category with 12 assists on Wahlin goals and 15 goals off Wahlin assists.

PRESEASON PUB
-The Tommies were picked to finish in first place in the CCHA coaches' poll for the second consecutive season earlier in September.

-Lucas Wahlin was once again named Preseason Player of the Year by the coaches after his 17-24—41 point season last year. The now senior was selected as team captain for the third-year running last week.
-Newcomer, Nathan Pilling, was named Preseason Rookie of the Year by the conference coaches. He skated in 218 total games across four seasons in the WHL for the Moose Jaw Warriors, Edmonton Oil Kings, and Seattle Thunderbirds… scored 70 career goals, added 56 career assists, and tallied 126 total points in the WHL… coming off a career-best season as assistant captain with the Thunderbirds with 37 goals, 30 assists, and 67 points in 67 games in 2024-25.
