The Tommies are back in the win column after a 3-2 comeback victory
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – St. Thomas men's hockey (18-8-3, 15-4-3) bounced back with a overtime road win in a tough environment against the Bowling Green Falcons (14-7-6, 11-5-3) on Friday night. Nathan Pilling scored a pair of power play goals and Nick Williams netted the game winner in overtime.
Bowling Green scored first at 13:52 just moments after a 5-on-3 power play for the Falcons expired. The Falcon's Gustav Stjernberg earned his fourth game misconduct of the season on a brutal hit on Jake Braccini at 6:10, and the Tommies earned a five-minute power play.
Nathan Pilling made BGSU pay at 18:33 from Lucas Wahlin and Ryan O'Neill. Wahlin extended his nation-leading point streak to 13 games on a slick spinning backhanded pass to set up Pilling's 13th of the season. Shortly thereafter, Lucas Van Vliet committed a slashing penalty at 19:09 to save what would have been a golden opportunity for a shorthanded goal. His penalty ended the Tommies' extended power play and pushed the game into the second period.
The Falcons scored at :54 during the 4-on-4 to recapture the lead. St. Thomas earned another power play at 11:28 and Nathan Pilling came through for the second time from Nick Williams and Lucas Wahlin. Pilling tied Alex Gaffney, Lucas Van Vliet, and Braccini for the team lead in power play goals with his fifth of the season.
Neither side scored in the third period.
Nick Williams scored the game-winning goal to earn the Tommies the second CCHA point. Luc Laylin and Dylan Godbout each assisted on the goal at 2:26. The tally from Williams was a program-record sixth of the season scored by a defenseman.
Carsen Musser earned his eighth win in goal with 25 saves on 27 shots faced. Shots were even in the game 27-27 and the Falcons won the faceoff battle, 39-29.
