Caige Sterzer scored the lone goal in the 3-1 loss
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The St. Thomas men's hockey team (18-9-3, 15-5-2) did not lead until their game-winning goal on Friday night in overtime against Bowling Green (15-7-6, 12-5-3). The Tommies got the lead in the very first minute on Saturday night but lost 3-1 at a packed Slater Family Ice Arena.
The very physical Falcons were whistled for a cross-checking minor penalty at :12 to give the red-hot Tommie power play a chance to strike first. It did. Casy Laylin set up Alex Gaffney with a shot at :56 and Gaffney snapped it off the shin pad of Caige Sterzer for the early lead.
Bowling Green answered by getting a shot past Aaron Trotter at 4:05. The game was tied headed into the first intermission for the second night in a row.
Just like the night before, the Falcons were the first to two goals at 3:40 in the second, but unlike last night, they won the race to three with a tally at 6:53 in the period on the power play.
Lucas Wahlin did score later in the period, but the goal was immediately waved off due to a high stick. Coach Blasi requested a review on the 50/50 call, but the review came up unsuccessful. Wahlin's nation-leading 13-game point streak came to an end.
St. Thomas outshot Bowling Green 17-5 in the third period but could not get anything more by the Falcon netminder.
The Purple outshot Bowling Green 32-23.
