Men’s Hockey retake first place in CCHA

The Tommies earned one point in a shootout loss to #18 Augustana
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas men's hockey (18-9-4, 15-5-3) earned one point on Friday night in a 3-3 tie with the 18th ranked Augustana Vikings (19-10-4, 13-8-4) to jump back into first place in the CCHA with three games still to play.
The Vikings scored two goals in the final five minutes and five seconds to push the game to overtime and then netted a pair of goals in the shootout after the game ended in a tie in the scoreless OT period.
Augustana also jumped out to a lead in the first period on the power play at 9:18. The Toms were well on their way to their nation-leading 10th win after their opponent scores first with two goals in the second and a third to start the final period.
Alex Gaffney fished the puck through the five-hole to tie the game at 10:05 from Charlie Schoen and Nathan Pilling. Hayes Hundley scored on a beautiful shot from distance at 13:59 while both sides were skating with four. Gaffney and Jake Braccini assisted on the Hundley goal.
The Purple scored a power play goal for the ninth consecutive game at 6:07 when Lucas Wahlin redirected his CCHA-leading 19th goal into the net on a shot from Ryan O'Neill. Lucas Van Vliet earned the secondary assist on the play. All six of the Tommies' top scorers this season earned at least one point tonight.
Carsen Musser took the net for St. Thomas and made 24 saves on 27 shots faced. The Purple were 1-4 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill. They outshot the Vikings 42-27.
