Sinn-sational: Tommies close home slate with 73-71 victory over Kansas City

2/25/2026 10:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball

ST. PAUL, MINN.  – It was a Sinn-sational evening for the University of St. Thomas women's basketball team. The Tommies closed their 2025-26 home slate in dramatic fashion. Thanks to late baskets from seniors Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) and Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Arena), St. Thomas battled through seven lead changes and 12 ties in the final quarter, earning a thrilling 73-71 victory in Lee & Penny Anderson Arena Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Tommies are now 15-14 on the season and 8-7 in Summit League play.

QUICK HITS:
  • Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) led all scorers with a career-high 23 points on 6-13 shooting with five rebounds, one block and two steals. The sophomore also went 11-12 from the charity stripe in Wednesday's victory.
  • Mikayla Werner (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) also set a new career-high in points Wednesday evening, tallying 22 on 8-14 shooting. The sophomore also tallied a double-double with 10 rebounds.
  • Savannah McGowan (Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale) added 10 points on the bench thanks to perfect 4-4 shooting from the floor.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: Kansas City opened the game with an early surge, building a nine-point advantage late in the quarter. St. Thomas chipped away in the closing seconds behind a last second three from Werner, but the Tommies trailed 20–14 after one.

Second Quarter: St. Thomas responded with its best offensive stretch of the night, using a balanced attack to flip the script. A 7-0 Tommie run midway through the quarter, highlighted by baskets from Kammie Ludwig (Geneseo, Ill. / Geneseo) and McGowan, helped St. Thomas take its first lead. The Tommies carried a slim 35-34 advantage into halftime after winning the quarter 21-14.

Third Quarter: The teams traded baskets throughout a tightly contested third quarter. St. Thomas maintained a narrow edge behind strong interior play and timely free throws, keeping pace with Kansas City and carrying a slim 49-48 lead into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter: The Roos briefly regained momentum early in the fourth, but St. Thomas answered with poise. The Tommies went 10-of-17 from the field in the quarter, but it still came down to the final seconds. Down 71-68 with 20 seconds remaining, Feuerbach's late layup pulled St. Thomas within one, but Kansas City had the final possession. That possession went exactly according to plan… for the Tommies. Autumn McCall (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) forced a late steal, which Hood corralled for an and-one layup. She sank the three, securing the 73-71 victory for St. Thomas.

UP NEXT:
The Tommies will conclude their 2025-26 season in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as they take on Oral Roberts in a preview of the 4v5 matchup of the Summit League Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 28.
