Not done yet: Tommies down Golden Eagles in Summit League quarterfinal

3/6/2026 3:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.  – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team is headed to the Summit League Tournament semifinals. The Tommies made history Friday afternoon, upending No. 4 Oral Roberts 81-54 to win the conference tournament quarterfinal for the first time in the DI era. Thanks to the win, St. Thomas will face top-seeded North Dakota State in Saturday's semifinal, which is set to start at 12:00 p.m. CT at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

QUICK HITS:
  • Mikayla Werner (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) led all scorers Friday afternoon, leading the way with 21 points on 9-10 shooting with nine rebounds, one assists and one steal.
  • Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) recorded her ninth double-double of the season, scoring 17 points with 10 rebounds. The sophomore also set the DI era record for single game blocks with five.
  • Every Tommie starter scored in double digits on Friday as they outscored Oral Roberts in the paint 46-22.
  • St. Thomas will make its first ever appearance in the Summit League Championship semifinal on Saturday and will face the top-seeded Bison at 12:00 p.m.

SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: St. Thomas was forced to play without First Team All-Summit League honoree Sand for nearly the entire first quarter, as the sophomore was dealt a foul one minute into the game. However, the Tommies hung with the fast paced Golden Eagles, even taking a 9-6 lead on a corner three from Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore). With Sand back in the game, St. Thomas only extended its lead, holding an 18-8 advantage after the first quarter.

Second Quarter: Oral Roberts turned up the defensive intensity in the second, forcing several Tommie turnovers to cut the lead to 31-19. However, St. Thomas maintained its composure, using baskets from Sand and Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Area) to sustain a double digit lead. The Tommies closed the quarter on a 14-0 run, securing a 44-19 halftime advantage.

Third Quarter: The Golden Eagles scored the first baskets of the third quarter, using an intense press to whittle the St. Thomas lead to 44-24. Oral Roberts technically won the quarter 17-13, but the Tommies still held the advantage 59-36 entering the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Again, the Golden Eagles brought the pressure in the fourth quarter, scoring the first three baskets to make it 61-42 Tommies with eight minutes remaining in regulation. Again, though, timely baskets from Werner and Autumn McCall (Blaine, Minn. / Centennial) maintained the Tommies 20+ point advantage. Late baskets
