ST. PAUL, Minn. — Junior forward Carter Bjerke led St. Thomas men's basketball to a 99-64 win over Kansas City Sunday afternoon with a historic performance of 30 points on 10 3-pointers, setting the program's Division I era single-game record and tying the all-time program record. He is the team's third 30-point scorer this season as the Tommies (18-6, 7-2 Summit League) dropped 18 total 3-pointers against the Roos (4-19, 1-8 Summit League), the most ever against a DI opponent.
FIRST HALF: After Kansas City opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, the teams traded leads three times over the opening minutes before Bjerke stepped back and buried his first 3-pointer of the afternoon to give St. Thomas an 8-6 edge. That basket ignited a decisive 15-2 Tommie run, as UST shot 6-of-9 from the field while forcing four UMKC turnovers and limiting the Roos to just one made field goal during the stretch.
Following a Kansas City layup, Bjerke knocked down his third 3-pointer of the half to push the lead to 23-10 with 11:49 remaining. Nolan Minessale then scored five straight points at the front end of a 17-2 surge that included three more 3-pointers from Bjerke, ballooning the margin to 40-16. Bjerke added two additional triples before the break to reach a career-high seven in the half and tie his personal best with 21 points, sending St. Thomas into halftime with a commanding 52-25 lead. The Tommies shot 58.1 percent from the field and 10-of-20 from beyond the arc, while Kansas City shot 32.3 percent and committed 11 turnovers that led to 12 UST points.
SECOND HALF: St. Thomas and Kansas City traded baskets over the first several possessions of the second half, with Bjerke continuing his historic shooting performance by extending his career-high 3-point total and reaching a new personal best of 24 points before the under-16 media timeout with the Tommies ahead 62-30. The Tommies maintained their offensive rhythm while controlling the pace on both ends of the floor.
Bjerke's record-setting day continued as he drilled his 10th 3-pointer of the game with 11:00 remaining, giving St. Thomas a game-high 40-point advantage at 72-32. The Tommies stayed efficient the rest of the way, finishing the half shooting better than 50 percent from the field at 19-of-35 while adding eight more 3-pointers. St. Thomas cruised through the final minutes behind balanced scoring and steady ball movement to close out the home victory.
