VERMILLION, S.D. – There are nights where things just don't go a team's way. Wednesday night was one of those nights for the University of St. Thomas women's basketball team. The Tommies looked to avenge their January 10 loss to the University of South Dakota Coyotes, but a win simply wasn't in the cards for St. Thomas. While everything fell for the Coyotes, seemingly nothing fell for the Tommies, as they fell by a final score of 67-55. With the loss, St. Thomas is now 10-12 overall and 3-5 in Summit League play.
QUICK HITS:
First Quarter: St. Thomas and South Dakota traded baskets early in the first quarter, with Sand and Autumn McCall (Blaine, Minn. / Centennial) connecting for early buckets for the Tommies. Midway through the quarter, the Coyotes went on a 7-0 run, as St. Thomas' perimeter shooting, and offense in general, went cold. Still, the Tommies found their rhythm late, as baskets from Sand and Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) kept St. Thomas within striking distance of South Dakota's 20-15 first quarter lead.
Second Quarter: The Tommies worked to cut the deficit further, but they simply had no answer for Angelina Robles. The Coyote point guard outscored St. Thomas 5-2 early in the second, helping extend the Coyote lead to 28-19 by the media timeout. From that point on, South Dakota could not stop scoring, as the hosts extended their lead to 42-21 by halftime.
Third Quarter: It was a low scoring quarter for both teams, as the Tommies and Coyotes struggled to generate offense. Sand continued to pace the St. Thomas offense, scoring 10+ points for the 19th time this season with a basket early in the quarter. The Tommies, though, simply could not match South Dakota, as the Coyotes led 61-36 after three quarters of play.
Fourth Quarter: St. Thomas outscored the Coyotes in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to cut into the South Dakota lead. Back-to-back threes from Laura Hauge (West St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) put some life back in the Tommies offense, and Sand recorded her sixth double-double of the 2025-26 season. Gardner also scored five points in the closing minute, but it wasn't enough to overcome the second quarter deficit. Despite St. Thomas' late push, the Tommies came up short 67-55.
UP NEXT:
St. Thomas will return to action on Wednesday, February 4 in a rematch with South Dakota State. The Tommies will host the Jackrabbits, with tipoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.
QUICK HITS:
- Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) once again paced the St. Thomas offense, recording her 19th double-digit point performance of the season and third consecutive double-double. The sophomore closed the game with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and three stelas.
- Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Area) added 10- points on 6-6 shooting from the charity stripe and three assists.
- Savanah Gardner (Apple Valley, Minn. / Eastview) scored five points on 2-2 shooting in the closing minute for the Tommies.
