Men's Hockey topples #15 Minnesota State

1/10/2026 9:38:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Tommies scored four goals in eight minutes to begin the middle frame

MANKATO, Minn. – Four goals from four different players in an eight-minute span to start the second period were enough for the St. Thomas Tommies (12-7-3, 9-3-2) to win their sixth game in a row and the season series over #15 Minnesota State (12-6-5, 8-4-3). The Tommies have worked their way into a tie atop the CCHA with one game in hand on Augustana.

Saturday night's first period looked a lot like periods of recent memory between the Tommies and Mavericks, hard-nosed, physical, and even. Both sides had chances on the power play but came up empty. Mankato's chance was a prolonged 5-on-3 for 82 seconds but Aaron Trotter came up with three big saves to keep the period scoreless.

Before most fans were back to their seats after the first intermission, Lucas Wahlin scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season at 0:20 from Bauer Berry and Ryan O'Neill who took a big hit shortly after dishing out his 80th career point. The Maverick who hit him was assessed a penalty nullified by the Tommie goal, a rule change in college hockey this offseason.

St. Thomas went quiet for six minutes until 6:35 when Attila Lippai tipped in his second goal in as many games from Caige Sterzer and Nick Williams. The Purple struck again at 6:52, this time Quinton Pepper from Lucas Van Vliet on the rush. O'Neill finished off the three-goal minute at 7:33 from Alex Gaffney and Mason Poolman.

Aaron Trotter made all seven saves necessary in the second period. The Mavericks got the game back to within in two goals after scoring at 10:40 and 19:27. The Tommie netminder earned his third win of the season with 18 saves on 20 shots.
