Tommies topple Bemidji State for seventh straight win

1/16/2026 11:21:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Lucas Wahlin scored his 50th career goal to jumpstart the 5-1 victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey's (13-7-3, 10-3-2) struggles in the first period looked like they were going to continue Friday night against Bemidji State (9-11-3, 7-5-3) with four first period penalties, a lengthy 5-on-3 kill, and a five-minute major. Fortunately for the Purple, their captain chose the perfect time to score his 50th career goal.

Lucas Wahlin took the first penalty of the game 28 seconds in and was joined in the box by Chase Cheslock 61 seconds later. The Toms killed off the 59 seconds while down two men and moments after Wahlin was released, he scored a shorthanded tally at 2:55 from Lucas Van Vliet. The goal was the 50th of Wahlin's collegiate career.

The Toms killed off the remainder of Cheslock's minor penalty before Nathan Pilling was assessed a major boarding penalty at 5:51. The Tommie penalty kill allowed just one shot on goal the entirety of the five minutes it was on the ice.

St. Thomas earned its first power play of the penalty-ridden period at 17:48 and Jake Braccini doubled the Purple lead at 18:44 from Charlie Schoen and Chase Cheslock.

Bemidji earned their only tally of the night at 5:59 of the second period. Carsen Musser made 14 saves on the 15 shots he faced enroute to his seventh win of the season.

Musser got some more run support in the second at 14:19 from Dylan Godbout's third of the season from Schoen and Bauer Berry.

The Toms scored their second and third power play goals of the night at 0:58 and 7:02 in the third. The first was Van Vliet from Cheslock and the second was Ryan O'Neill from Hayes Hundley and Nathan Pilling.

Friday's final shot tally was 29-15 in favor of St. Thomas.
