Senior combined for 27 kills and no attack errors in wins over Houston Christian and Bethune-Cookman

HOUSTON – Senior middle blocker Megan Wetter was one of many bright spots from the opening day of the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament in Houston as St. Thomas volleyball came away with wins over Houston Christian and Bethune-Cookman. Wetter totaled 27 kills with no attack errors as the Tommies swept the Huskies (25-18, 25-20, 25-13) and beat the Wildcats in four sets (27-25, 19-25, 25-10, 25-22) for their first two wins of 2025.

SCORING SUMMARY VS. HOUSTON CHRISTIAN
Set One: After leading 11–8, the Tommies saw Houston Christian rally to go up 18–15. St. Thomas responded in emphatic fashion, ripping off 10 straight points to close the set. Setter Morgan Kealy chipped in two kills and paired with Addie Schmotzer on a block during the run, while Schmotzer added another solo block. Megan Wetter capped the comeback with a service ace for the 25–18 win.

Set Two: Kealy put together three service aces early in set two to take a 10-5 lead that was eventually pushed to 16-10. The Huskies came back to tie the set, 18-18, but St. Thomas seized control by taking 8 of the final 10 points. Anya Schmidt provided a kill and an ace in the stretch, Ellie Gustafson added two kills, and Wetter delivered the final two points with back-to-back kills as the Tommies pushed ahead 2–0.

Set Three: St. Thomas dominated from the start, racing out to a 10–2 lead fueled by four block assists from Wetter, two alongside Kealy and two with Schmidt. The Tommies' balanced attack featured kills from four different players, including two from Schmidt and one from Wetter, as they never allowed HCU closer than seven points. The 25–13 decision secured the sweep and the Tommies' first win of the season.

SCORING SUMMARY VS. BETHUNE-COOKMAN
Set One: After a Bethune-Cookman service ace gave the Wildcats set point at 24–23, the Tommies regrouped during a timeout and stormed back. Back-to-back kills by Anya Schmidt tied it at 24, and a service ace from Morgan Kealy set up set point for UST. Tezra Rudzitis followed with a kill, and Schmidt sealed it with a service ace to complete the 27–25 comeback.

Set Two: Bethune-Cookman used a mid-set surge to pull ahead 17–10 before the Tommies fought back. A late 5–1 run, highlighted by kills from Ellie Gustafson and Schmidt, cut the deficit to 20–18. The Wildcats answered with a final push to even the match, 25–19.

Set Three: The Tommies dominated the third set from the first serve, as Ella Voegele keyed a 7–0 opening run behind strong serving. Megan Wetter contributed a kill and solo block in the stretch, while UST spread the offense with kills from three different attackers. The Tommies stretched the lead to 9–1 and never looked back, rolling to a 25–10 win.

Set Four: A back-and-forth set swung the Tommies' way late as Allie Kopp delivered back-to-back aces to push the lead to 21–16. Wetter chipped in two kills in the closing stretch, and Rudzitis finished the match with a kill to secure the 3–1 victory.
