Tommies take game one in five innings, fall in game two in eight

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Softball (32-17 overall, 13-4 Summit League) ran its DI program-best win streak up to 12 games with a 12-2 win in five innings over North Dakota State (19-29, 6-11) before it dropped game two, 5-4 in eight innings on Friday at South Field.

The Tommies moved to within one win of a share of the Summit League Regular Season Championship and will have a chance to win their first title of the DI era tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Game One Recap
During the Toms' 11-game win streak, they scored at least one run in the first inning in nine consecutive games. They came into Friday having outscored opponents 70-27 in the first inning this season and continued their first inning dominance with six runs in the bottom of the first against the Bison.

Cassidy Carby singled home Avery Wukawitz to break the seal and then Kaitlyn Raymond flew out to center field for a sacrifice fly to score Carby. Kameron Monson stepped up with two outs and singled home Cook. Ruby Moore kept the party going with a bases-clearing three RBI triple to right center field, her second triple in as many games.

Ava Kleinfeldt went to work with a lead and tossed four scoreless innings around a pair of runs surrendered in the third. The freshman went five, allowed two earned runs on five hits, one walk, and three strikeouts for her 11th win of 2025.

Her offense helped her along with two runs in the second and four in the fourth. Kameron Monson came though once again with a two RBI single to score Carby and Cook.

Abbi Stierlen got the scoring going in the fourth with a single to send Raymond around. Jenna Kuhn drew a pinch-hit RBI hit by pitch and then Laken Lienhard walked to score Anna Caruso. Avery Wukawitz also earned an RBI the hard way with a hit by pitch.

St. Thomas scored 12 runs on 10 hits and committed one error. Ella Cook, Kaitlyn Raymond, and Kameron Monson all recorded two hits, Monson also earned a walk. Of the 10 hits, one went for extra bases (Ruby Moore's triple). Wukawitz swiped two bags enroute to the win.

Game Two Recap
The Bison gave the Tommies a taste of their own medicine with a first inning lead, something not many teams had done this season against the Purple. They got to St. Thomas' starter, Christina Crawford for one run on a sacrifice fly in the first.

They added on for three runs in the third on a bases-clearing three RBI triple with two outs in a two-two count to go up 4-0.
St. Thomas started the long road back to even with two runs in the bottom of the third. Laken Lienhard scored Adrianna Young on a sacrifice fly that turned into a double play after an uncharacteristic baserunning error. Avery Wukawitz picked up her teammate with her ninth home run of the season (a new DI era single season program record) to make it a 4-2 game.

Ella Cook entered the ballgame to pitch in the top of the fourth in relief of Crawford who went three innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. Cook worked four straight scoreless innings to help the Tommies into extra innings.

The Purple completed the comeback with a sacrifice fly from Abbi Stierlen to score Miley Wichman in the fourth and an RBI single from Avery Wukawitz to score Zoe Trotter in the bottom of the seventh.

North Dakota State took advantage of a St. Thomas error to score one run in the top of the eighth inning and then worked around a one-out Kaitlyn Raymond single in the bottom of the eighth to spoil the Tommies' championship hopes.

Cook went five innings without allowing an earned run on three hits and one walk, she went down as the losing pitcher of record. Wukawitz, Raymond, and Adrianna Young each tallied two hits. Ruby Moore and Abbi Stierlen each doubled and Wukawitz launched the only home run of the doubleheader. The Tommie center fielder stole another base in game two.
