The Tommies are regular season champions after 9-0 run rule victory
ST. PAUL, Minn. – After just four seasons in Division I, the St. Thomas Softball team (33-17 overall, 14-4 Summit League) climbed to the top of the Summit League to become regular season champions for the first time in program history. The Tommies defeated the North Dakota State Bison (19-30, 6-12), 9-0 in five innings behind a complete game shutout from freshman Ava Kleinfeldt.
The Tommies improved upon their 2024 win total by 17 games and finished 2025 with a +179 run differential.
Recap
The Tommies did what they did best all season long and scored one run in the first inning on Saturday. Laken Lienhard led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on an Avery Wukawitz double. Wukawitz later scored on a fielder's choice with one out as Ella Cook earned the RBI.
Ultimately, that run would have been enough because Ava Kleinfeldt brought her A-game in the circle. The freshman earned her 12th victory of the season behind five innings of shutout ball. She allowed just three hits and one walk and struck out five Bison hitters. She retired 12 of the final 13 hitters she faced.
Her offense supplied her with a bundle of run support and Laken Lienhard was the catalyst. She belted a no-doubt solo home run to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Wukawitz and Cook each reached base and Kaitlyn Raymond pushed Wukawitz across home with a groundout. Abbi Stierlen singled home Cook to complete the three-run third.
St. Thomas needed four runs to reach the run-rule minimum and got five in the bottom of the fourth. Ella Cook doubled a pair home (Lienhard and Wukawitz) and then Raymond followed up with a sacrifice fly to score Cassidy Carby. Abbi Stierlen singled home the pinch-running Miley Wichman for her second run-scoring hit of the ballgame. Senior, Adrianna Young singled Stierlen home to put the Purple in front 9-0.
Kleinfeldt struck out the leadoff hitter in the fifth inning and then allowed a one-out single. She induced a ground ball to Laken Lienhard who flipped to Ruby Moore for one out and then Moore rocketed a throw to Stierlen to complete the championship-securing double play. Fitting for an infield that converted at a .970 fielding percentage in 2025.
The Tommies are not eligible for the Summit League Tournament next weekend. They finished their fourth season of DI Softball 33-17.
