Rosner sets seventh best men’s pole vault mark for track & field
LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The pole vault event group led the way Saturday for St. Thomas track & field as the men's and women's programs competed at the Ashton May Invitational in La Crosse, Wis. The teams combined for four event wins and 11 top three finishes.
Sophomore Morgan Koppelman broke a 21-year-old women's program record in the pole vault with a mark of 3.86 meters, besting the previous mark of 3.80m set by Karolien Bastiaens in 2004. Koppelman finished third in the event followed by senior Katie Nollette (3.66m) while freshman Brooke Wisdom joined the pole vault top 10 list with a mark of 3.51m, ranking sixth in program history, while finishing 10th Saturday.
On the men's side, senior Jack Rosner took fourth in the pole vault with a personal record 4.76m. His leap ranks seventh for the program outdoors. Two men finished just outside the program's top 10 list including senior Shane Aberg in the discus, finishing fourth with a toss of 48.97m, and freshman Riddik Collier in the 100m dash, taking sixth in the prelims with a time of 10.78 and 10.71 (wind aided) to finish second in finals.
Three women Tommies placed themselves among the program's top 10 lists. Senior Hailey Shimon was 0.05m shy of tying the program record in the discus, winning the event Saturday with a mark of 46.29m. Junior Chloe Staub improved her top 10 mark in the javelin, now ranking fifth with a throw of 41.05m to finish third on Saturday behind graduate student Anna Swanson who won the event. Sophomore Elise Biorn took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.31m, which ranks ninth all-time at St. Thomas.
Joining Shimon and Swanson with event wins are senior Hailey Hindt in the 400m hurdles (1:01.74) and senior Sam Duffing in the 110m hurdles (14.19).
QUOTABLES
Men's Head Coach Pete Wareham:
"It was nice to get outside and compete. We were able to bring a large part of our roster and set the tone for the remainder of the outdoor season. Several guys set personal records today which we hope is an indicator for more success and improvement down the road.
"I really like the mindset on our team. They are committed and dedicated on a daily basis. On meet day they are ready to compete.
"As the weather warms up we expect to keep improving. We will split our squad next week with meets at the University of Arkansas, Bucknell and Bethel."
Women's Head Coach Ashley Lucas:
"Today was a pretty good team opener. I wouldn't say the conditions were ideal but I felt like the team still very much took advantage of having the opportunity to compete. We added more to the top 10 list highlighted by Morgan Koppelman having a monster day in the pole vault breaking the school record. Now we regroup and refocus as we split up between three meets next week."
UP NEXT
The men's and women's program will split its teams during its next weekend of action, sending athletes to the Arkansas Spring Invitational, Bison Outdoor Classic and Bethel Invitational on April 12-13.
