Women’s relay teams account for three of five total St. Thomas records
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A medley of St. Thomas track & field records were broken April 23-26 as the Tommies completed their extended competition week at the Gary Wilson Invite and Drake Relays. Jack Rosner shattered the program mark in the decathlon while four relay records were set between the men's and women's programs.
Rosner, who held the previous record of 7249 set last year, improved the mark to 7661 to finish fifth at the Drake Relays. His mark ranks ninth nationally among all NCAA Division I athletes following a win in the javelin, a second-place finish in the 1500-meter run and third place finishes in the pole vault and 110m hurdles, among the 10 events. Rosner's pole vault mark of 4.85m ranks tied for fourth all-time at St. Thomas while his javelin mark of 56.80m ranks eighth.
Three of the program's four relay records came on the women's side on the final day of the meet, including the 4x400m relay, sprint medley relay and distance medley relay. The 4x400m relay of Hannah Cornelius, Rebecca Randleman, Hailey Hindt and Olivia Keller took second in the event in 3:42.06. The SMR and DMR each broke records that were at least 15 years old as the sprint relay of Janiya Moore, Ava Wolfe, Kate Kariniemi and Emmy Schulz set the record at 4:07.36 while the distance relay of Malayh Metcalf, Lily Jarrett, Alicia Belany and Molly Desotell set the record at 11:44.55.
After opening prelims of the 4x100m relay with the program's 13th fastest time, the team of Riddik Collier, Mitchell Piehl, Jayson Koel and Johnny Bezdicek set the St. Thomas men's record of 40.63 to finished third during the finals heat. The time was 0.07 seconds faster than the previous time set at the Summit League conference meet last season, which included Piehl and Bezdicek.
The Tommies finished with five top-five finishes including the women's 4x400m relay, Anna Swanson who took second in the javelin (46.23m), Danika Apple who finished third in the 100m dash (12.16), Ava Pankratz who placed fourth in the 5000m run (16:54.13), and Rosner in the decathlon.
Earlier in the week, the Tommies set three top 10 program marks at the Gary Wilson Invite. Cornelius ran the program's fourth fastest 100m dash in 12.04 for the women, while Sam Duffing improved his second-ranked time in the 110m hurdles to 14.16 and Koel tied for the ninth best 100m dash in 10.75.
In total, St. Thomas earned three event wins (Apple in the 100m and 200m dashes and Hailey Shimon in the discus) and seven top three finishes at the Gary Wilson Invite.

Men's Head Coach Pete Wareham:
"Jack Rosner had a spectacular weekend setting a new school record in the decathlon. He is having an outstanding season and so is Sam Duffing. Our middle-distance group also looks good. Blake Burnstad and Cam Heppner raced very well in a crowded field of runners at the Drake Relays. For sure one of our highlights was Sam Gausmann who made a big jump with his impressive race at the University of Minnesota meet.
"While we still have some injuries that are significant, we are also seeing guys step up their games. We need this to continue over the final weeks of the season. The next couple of weeks will allow us to sharpen up as we head into the conference championship."
Women's Head Coach Ashley Lucas:
"Drake Relays is always such a historic meet to be at, and this is the biggest group that we have gotten into the meet which is exciting and speaks to the progress and building the team has been doing. I thought across the board everyone competed well and we walked away with three school records. There are definitely things we will continue to sharpen up on as we head into this final week of competition before the championships but myself, the coaching staff and the team are excited for what's still to come."
